On the U.S. Election

We woke up this morning to a very different world.

First, congratulations to President-elect Trump. The American people have democratically chosen him as their President.

Canada has always been the United States' closest ally, something we will work to continue. Many of our jobs, and our prosperity to some extent, depend on our close relations with the United States.

Being a close friend doesn't mean we always have to agree with each other. Close friends remain close friends even when they disagree from time to time. Undoubtedly, we will disagree on many things, but for the sake of both Canadians and Americans we have to work our way through these differences as doing so is in the best interest of the Canadian and American people.

We are also going to have to work together internationally.

The international legal order has brought us almost 80 years of relative peace. Globalization has lifted millions and millions of people across the world out of poverty. The United States has always been a leader in establishing and maintaining that international legal order. Hopefully, it will continue to do so.

The international legal order is far more than one country. Irrespective of whatever role the United States chooses to play in the next few years, we in Canada, and the rest of us in the world, need to learn to be able to maintain the international legal order. This will require work, but we are up to it.

Again, congratulations to President-elect Trump.
